Ok, so you need to downgrade PSP firmware so you can get all the games and movies you could possibly dream of. Before you begin you will need a internet connection, usb cable, a PSP (naturally) & firmware downgrade software. Towards the end of the article I’ll share a few links for you to get the firmware software that you need for free and a link to reviews on the best free psp download sites.

Firstly you need to know if you are eligible to downgrade your PSP firmware. Unfortunately if your firmware is about version 3 you will have problems downgrading your firmware. For you to be able to use the your PSP for getting content of the internet your goal is to get your firmware to 1.5 or below.

Ok so lets assume you have your usb cable ready on hand to downgrade your PSP firmware the next step is to find out what version you currently have. This will appear as the PSP loads on startup. Write down what version this is so when we begin the hunt for your PSP downgrade software we can make sure you get the right one.

The first thing that I recommend, if you don’t have already, is to buy the biggest memory stick for your PSP that you can afford. The more space you have the more games, movies, music, etc that you are going to be able to have at any given time.

You will also need all of the software that is needed. I will explain everything as I go through the steps below. The software includes a place to download the ROM’s (games), and software that will copy the games to the correct directory on your memory stick.

The only other thing that you will need is the USB cable for your PSP. You will need to connect it to your computer and copy the games that you download over to your memory stick. You can get a USB cable at any store that carries games usually, but you should have the one that came with it originally.

Now that you know what is required, the only thing left is to start downloading and playing the games. Sounds simple, but there are a lot of bad download services on the net. You need to make sure that you have one that is reliable, has customer support, and a fresh large database of games.

Once you get your games downloaded, the next step is to get the games over to your PSP. So, connect your USB cable, and browse to your memory stick. This is where you will copy your games. Requirements:

* Sony PSP with battery charged at least 75%.(Recommended: Full charge)

* Memory Stick Duo (Recommended: 1GB and above)

The first step to running your custom made Playstation games on your PSP involves getting the 3.02 OE-B (stands for Open Edition).

Starting with firmware 1.50

The first step is to have a PSP that is running on the 1.5 version of the PSP firmware. You can check for this by going into the System “System Settings” on your PSP, then System Information.

Important note: There is a version of the PSP’s motherboard known as TA-082, which, will not work under this situation. Do not attempt to continue with the installation if you have this motherboard. For more information, see The PSP-TA082 guide.

If you don’t have a 1.5 firmware, you can downgrade your PSP. If you don’t know how, just refer to the internet, there are many guides out there on how to downgrade any version.

Installing the 3.02 OE-A firmware:

1. First, download the official Sony PSP 1.50 Firmware and 3.02 Firmware, available here:

2. Rename the 1.50 Firmware to 150.PBP, and the 3.02 firmware to 302.PBP.

3. Download the 3.02 Open Edition A from the here. Extract the files to the directory of your choice.

4. Copy the files 150.PBP and 302.PBP to the directory called oeupdmaker.

5. Copy the directories 302oeflasher, 302oeflasher%, oeupdmaker, oeupdmaker% to your PSP under the /PSP/GAME/ directory.

6. Go into your Game on your PSP menu, select Memory Card, and run 3.02 OE-A Update Maker. This will extract files from the 1.50 and 3.02 firmware to create the new custom firmware.

7. Reconnect your PSP to your computer. In the owupdmaker on your PSP is a new file titled DATA.DXAR. Copy this file to the 302oeflaster directory.

8. Run the program on your PSP called 3.02 OE-A Firmware Install. Do not turn off your PSP at this moment.

9. Wait – when it’s done, your PSP will reboot, and you’ll have your 3.02 OE-A firmware.

Upgrade to 3.02 OE-B:

1. Download the 3.02 OE-B installer from here.

2. Extract the directory.

3. Make new folder in you PSP’s directory name it GAME150.

4. Copy the folder OEB_UPDATE to your /PSP/GAME150 directory on your PSP.

5. On your PSP, run the program titled 3.02 OE-B Update.

6. That’s it – it will update, then exit. You can now backup your PS1 games and play them on your PSP.

Downgrade your PSP easily and safely. If you wish to downgrade your PSP, this may be very possible. There are only a few versions right now that you cannot downgrade. If you currently own a PSP that is over version 3.03 then, unfortunately, you cannot downgrade (at the time of writing).

The good news is that if you own a PSP under 3.03, you can downgrade to 1.50. Now what’s so good about 1.50? Well, for one, it lets us play games, known as homebrew. These homebrew games are made by programmers for the PSP and are readily available to download to your PSP legally. In addition to being able to play homebrew games, we can also download emulators which let us play a range of “old school” games from other consoles like Nintendo Game Boy, Sega Master system, Atari, and even one for the Nintendo 64 (plus a stack more).

Aside from the thousands of games w can play with a downgraded PSP, you can also download homebrew applications, these applications let you do a wide variety of things with your PSP such as turn your PSP into a Universal Remote Control, Wi-fi Sniffer (lets you find wireless networks in your area), GPS and you can even stream media over the Internet through your Wi-Fi receiver on to your PSP.This is why many people make the decision to downgrade their PSP.

You should consider purchasing a bigger memory stick if you decide to downgrade your PSP, currently when you purchase a PSP, you are usually given a 32 MB memory stick, which is not a lot of room and if you really want to make the most of your PSP I would recommend you purchasing a 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB or even the recently released 4 GB memory stick for your PSP. Obviously, the bigger your memory stick, the more games, applications and DVD’s you can place on your memory stick.

To downgrade your PSP you really only need a couple of things. Firstly, you need a mini USB cable to connect your PSP to your computer. Secondly, you need the correct downgrader to run and install the correct files on to your PSP.

Be very careful, when downgrading your PSP and make sure you follow the instructions exactly as they are presented. If you do not, the chances are you will brick your PSP (brick meaning, render it useless). It also goes without saying that if you try to downgrade your PSP with the wrong installer, e.g. using a 2.8 downgrader and your PSP is a 2.6, this will also brick your PSP.

While some people may think that downgrading their PSP is not worth the risk. I for one feel it is. Downgrading my PSP has changed it from the average run-of-the-mill PSP to a fully functional multimedia centre. I no longer have to purchase games if I want to as there are hundreds if not thousands of homebrew games that I can legally download and play, I can also back up my entire DVD collection and watch them on my PSP, and my favourite,change the TV channels with my PSP while everyone wonders who the hell keeps changing the channels, doesn’t it sound enticing?

I suggest you downgrade your PSP today, you won’t regret it and you’ll never look back.
